Last time we had a fantastic turnout of folks coming to experiment with Sword-Versus-Knife, and we’re excited to see what happens this time as we focus in on the intimate violence of Knife fighting. Fight Jam Feb 2012: Bring a Knife to a Sword fight!

Imagine: A duel-happy gentleman (or lady) corners you in a dark alley and shoves a smallsword in your face. You check your hip. Curses! You’ve only got a knife! What do you do (besides cry uncontrollably)? How can you turn this to your advantage? How can he (or she) take the advantage back? Does anybody really win? We will play with choreography exploring this odd pairing and see what the possibilities are. In true Jam fashion, all skill levels and ideas are welcome: if you’ve never fought with a sword or a knife before, you may have a valuable new way of looking at things.

This week also marks our debut at the Second City Training Center! We’re thrilled and grateful to have the opportunity to work in such a great space in the heart of the theatre community. We hope to see you there!

Free Skate at Forteza!

We’ve acquired an amazing opportunity at the new Forteza Fitness space to gather like-minded performers dedicated to developing their stage combat skills. (So let the gathering begin.) It begins tonight! We are, shall we say, super excited about it. We’ll run it as a fairly freeform workout, with a group warmup, some group activities, and a chance to break off and work on whatever tickles your fancy. The space includes weights, punching bags, and an assortment of weaponry to play with.

Due to sudden loss of space, we had to cancel our workout tonight. Watch this space for updates for future dates and new locations!

Fight Jam is known for our free monthly classes, but we’re also a community of fighters that loves to get together with other fighters to work out, hone our skills, and play with new ideas. ~~To that end and thanks to our friends at Asylum Stunts, this Thursday we’re relaunching our weekly unstructured stage combat jam sessions. Even better—the first time is free!~~

We’ll keep it simple this week and do a weapon-less session focusing on falls, rolls, and unarmed fighting. Skyline is a fantastic gym with plenty of floor space, mats, and gymnastics equipment, so come on out and take advantage of it!

Fight Jam is starting off the new year right with some oooooh shiiiny Hollywood-style swashbuckling swordplay. Come join us, fresh(ish) off the Winter Wonderland Workshop, as we play with the swish, shine, and slash we all know and love. We’ll bring the swords, you bring the pizzaz.

Fight Jam at Winter Wonderland!

This weekend, most of us at Fight Jam can be found at the Winter Wonderland Workshop—the largest regional stage combat workshop in the country, presented by our friends at M.A.C.E.—helping in various capacities to make it happen. If you’re reading this because you met us there and/or ate our cookies, welcome! If not, you really missed out on the cookies.

We’ll be back for our January Jam on the last Saturday of the month (the 28th at 2pm) at a location TBD. If you haven’t already, sign up for our mailing list so you won’t forget!

Stunt Jam – 12/20/11

This month, instead of hosting our own class we’ll be partnering with Asylum Stunts at their weekly workout! Asylum is a group of film stunt performers, coordinators, and teachers that provides specialized training for actors as well as twice-weekly general training sessions at Skyline Gym. Their sessions cost $20 to attend, but the first one is free! Several of us at Fight Jam have gotten to work (and play!) with them and we think they’re pretty damn awesome.

So come out and learn to fight, fall, and roll like a film performer!

Note the day and location change—this is next Tuesday, not Monday.

Fight Jam Scrappers Zev and Gabriel, along with Sandra Howard, are super excited to be participating in a one-night-only stage combat extravaganza tonight (Thursday, December 8th) presented by Nothing Special Productions: Fight Night! The show also includes the awesome:

Drinks will be available as audiences join in the mayhem to win raffles and prizes.

Nothing Special Productions, in collaboration with creative powerhouses The House Theater of Chicago, The Inconvenience, Babes With Blades, and Fight Jam, is winding up for one mean right hook with FIGHT NIGHT. For one-night-only, December 8, 2011, these five groups will present a series of scenes at The Den Theatre in Wicker Park featuring mind-blowing combat of all kinds, presented in wrestling match style by hosts Brian Rohde of Nothing Special Productions and Matt Castellvi of nefarious sketch comedy team Octavarius. Drinks will be available as audiences join in the mayhem to win raffles and prizes. Did we mention drinks will be available?
