Fight Jam Feb 2012: Bring a Knife to a Sword fight!

Imagine: A duel-happy gentleman (or lady) corners you in a dark alley and shoves a smallsword in your face. You check your hip. Curses! You’ve only got a knife! What do you do (besides cry uncontrollably)? How can you turn this to your advantage? How can he (or she) take the advantage back? Does anybody really win? We will play with choreography exploring this odd pairing and see what the possibilities are. In true Jam fashion, all skill levels and ideas are welcome: if you’ve never fought with a sword or a knife before, you may have a valuable new way of looking at things.

This week also marks our debut at the Second City Training Center! We’re thrilled and grateful to have the opportunity to work in such a great space in the heart of the theatre community. We hope to see you there!

Date: Saturday, Feb 25
Time: 2:00 PM — 4:00 PM
Location:
Second City Training Center
1608 N. Wells St, Room 301
Chicago, IL

Stunt Jam – 12/20/11

Fight Jam Chicago & Asylum StuntsThis month, instead of hosting our own class we’ll be partnering with Asylum Stunts at their weekly workout! Asylum is a group of film stunt performers, coordinators, and teachers that provides specialized training for actors as well as twice-weekly general training sessions at Skyline Gym. Their sessions cost $20 to attend, but the first one is free! Several of us at Fight Jam have gotten to work (and play!) with them and we think they’re pretty damn awesome.

So come out and learn to fight, fall, and roll like a film performer!

Note the day and location change—this is next Tuesday, not Monday.

Date: Tuesday, 20 December 2011
Time: 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Location: Skyline Gymnastics
4121 N. Ravenswood Ave
Chicago, IL 60618

We hope to see you there!

Take It Outside! – Monday 11/21/11

Environmental Fighting

Gabriel Faith Howard & Marcus Davis at Bristol Renaissance Faire 2010. Photo by Kathryn JonesRenaissance faires, Navy Pier, outdoor festivals, and more—these kinds of venues bring their own challenges to the performer and director of staged violence not seen in your average theater. Join us as we explore ways of approaching outdoor, in-the-middle-of-everything street fighting: where your stage is gravel and tree roots, your audience walks among you and might show up after you begin or leave before you finish. What can we do within these constraints, and how can we make them work to our advantage?

Marcus Davis has three years of experience creating and performing fights and stunts at the Bristol Renaissance Faire, and will be leading the class. He is joined by Scrapper Gabriel, who has also spent three seasons performing at the Bristol Faire, including one on the same fight cast.

Free Skate at Forteza!

Forteza: Fitness, Physical Culture, and Martial Arts
Thursdays 8-10PM
4435 N. Ravenswood Ave

We’ve acquired an amazing opportunity at the new Forteza Fitness space to gather like-minded performers dedicated to developing their stage combat skills. (So let the gathering begin.) It begins tonight! We are, shall we say, super excited about it. We’ll run it as a fairly freeform workout, with a group warmup, some group activities, and a chance to break off and work on whatever tickles your fancy. The space includes weights, punching bags, and an assortment of weaponry to play with.

As always, contact us or drop us a comment/message on facebook if you have questions or want more details. Hope to see you there!
